Jamaica on June 2nd, 2009
I got to spend the previous weekend with my brother, his wife Lindsey and my nephew Marshall. It was a great weekend even though Marshall came down with a sickness and was not himself. I enjoyed my time in North Carolina.
I arrived in Jamaica this morning. It was a nice flight from Charlotte (the best airport i've EVER been in). After getting in at 11:30 AM I traveled through the airport quickly and met up with Naceina, the lady who uses our Mazda when we're not in Jamaica. I laughed at my first experience with the car this summer. As they pulled up I clearly saw bright green engine coolant seeping from the car onto the pavement. Knowing the trouble we had with the car last spring i'm not surprised, even though we thought it was all fixed up. We hope it was simply wear and tear from the four hour drive from Kingston to Montego Bay.
My first order of business was meeting with Cynthia and Leland James, the wonderful couple who are renting out their 4 bedroom apartment to us. I received a full tour of the apartment and we settled on the terms of the lease. It's a great place in Bogue Heights overlooking the city of MoBay. We will use it as a staff lodging center when we're not with teams and as a storage facility for clothes, tools and other PPM stuff.
I was able to meet with Gordon, a car dealer that Evarton Jackson connected me with. We didn't have a lot of luck with cars, everything he has is out of our budget, but he's going to spend some time looking for what we need. Great guy.
I then got a bite to eat and headed to the DigiCell store. I spent a good half hour sorting out our phones and purchasing new sim cards and phone minutes. As I left DigiCell I was startled to see a boot on my car! I parked in a permit only zone, which i've ALWAYS parked in, but didn't have any trouble until now! It took me another hour to get out of that mess.
After finishing that and being ripped off by a rude taxi driver, I sit in the lobby of Toby's stealing their wireless internet once again. (Actually we buy a lot of meals here so it's not really stealing, it's sharing). I've been able to do some work this evening setting up meetings and doing some trip preparation. This evening Brianna Weatherly, one of our assistant trip leaders, arrives at 8:20 pm. I will pick her up and we'll head for the new base in Bogue Heights.
Tomorrow I will hit up Scotia Bank and try to set up our checking account. I hope to meet with Reverend Rudolph Brooks out in Sudbury late in the morning before we head west to Grange Hill and Fullersfield for last minute set up before our trip with Westview Baptist Church begins on Friday.
