Jamaican Highlights

As you likely know, i've spent a good amount of time over the past 8 years serving in Jamaica. I typically spend a few months of the year on the island helping guide our ministry and leading short term mission teams. Jamaica is such a small country but is literally packed full of awesomeness. I am beginning a series of blog posts that will highlight some of my favorites of Jamaica. These will be communities, restaurants, beaches, churches, etc. I hope this gives you a further look into my heart for Jamaica and the uniqueness of the island.

Boston Bay Jerk!

Boston Bay is on the far northeastern coast of Jamaica. For those who know Jamaica well, it's past Port Antonio. This is over a four hour drive from MoBay and a few hours from Kingston as well. This part of the island is known for a few things... rain, natural beauty, the only surfing spot in Jamaica, and the island's BEST jerk. That's right! They host a jerk festival each year, during which the best cooks on the island showcase their skills and treat their fellow Jamaicans to the unique taste of Jamaican jerk. Boston Bay is far out, but it's well worth a trip off the beaten path to taste everything 'jerk'- chicken, pork, sausage... And don't forget the Ting and festivals! Jamaica's youth, our neighbors Jamaica has come upon some rough political times in the last two years. Recently, the Jamaican Labour Party lost elections to Portia Simpson Miller (the new prime minister) and the People's National Party. As I drove through Kingston on the day of the election and spent time in the city the days following the election I reflected on some things about the country. The first is that Jamaica is a growing country with a bright future. The education and health care systems are fantastic and there are great opportunities for economic growth. Although statistics show that Jamaica is a "developing country," there are strong industries and hope for a bright future for the young Jamaican workforce. Something else I noticed was the overall stability of the people and environment. Kingston is a big city- like almost 2 million people. God is Good. He has been teaching me so much lately. I am reminded that we serve an infinite God, which means there is always MORE OF HIM to be had. I am not one who frequently “hears the voice of God”. But recently, in the midst of a challenging time, he spoke clearly to me. So I am writing this so not to forget and maybe to encourage those who come across this blog. The last few months have been a whirlwind. They have challenged me beyond belief yet within the challenges I have seen God and heard God more clearly than I have in a very long time.
