There's Gold in the Hills!

Those who follow world news likely know the recent news about there being large deposits of Gold in Haiti...

"Its capital is blighted with earthquake rubble. Its countryside is shorn of trees, chopped down for fuel. And yet, Haiti's land may hold the key to relieving centuries of poverty, disaster and disease: There is gold hidden in its hills — and silver and copper, too" (Mendoza, Associated Press).

This is very exciting news, especially for individuals and organizations who are investing in relief work and ministry in Haiti. Of course, the country of Haiti must also be ecstatic about this discovery and the actions being taken by mining companies to begin extracting these gold reserves, which will provide jobs and income for thousands of Haitians. Experts are saying that this could turn the tables on decades of poverty in Haiti. They say there's not only $20 billion dollars worth of gold in Haiti's hills, but also silver and copper.

There's something else hidden in the hills of Haiti. Since the earthquake, Praying Pelican Missions has been serving in Haiti, developing relationships with local churches through the MEBSH (Missionary Evangelical Baptists of Southern Haiti ). Our plan to serve in Haiti stemmed from our strong partnership with churches in Jamaica with the Jamaica Baptist Union, but these plans obviously sped up after the 2010 earthquake. Our partnership with local churches has been rich and successful. One example is Bethel Lutheran Church, who served in Haiti in March and helped pastor Valco in his endeavor to rebuild a church and school that was destroyed by the earthquake: Read Bethel Lutheran Church's trip journal. The discovery of gold in Haiti is exciting, that's for sure. However, Praying Pelican Missions discovered gold in the hills of Haiti years earlier- it's in the hearts of the Haitian people. They are warm, welcoming, loving, & resilient in their fight to survive and the Christian's attitude of Paul and James when facing struggles. As numerous Haitian churches meet under tents like we see below, remember that the real value in Haiti won't be mined from the soil in the hills, it will be found in the hearts of those who love God, love their country, and won't give up. It's a privilege for Praying Pelican Missions to be a part of the mining industry in Haiti as we find hope in the heart's of Haitians.
